The nearest car park, Latrigg, above Keswick, is more than an hour and 3.5-miles away, making Skiddaw House Youth Hostel an unrivalled base for getting off the beaten track and savouring back to basics simplicity in a spectacular location. Skiddaw, one of the Lake's towering mountains, looms in the distance, while lush countryside with tall grass surrounds the house. The hostel once served as a gamekeeper's lodge in the 1800s before providing a safe space for walkers, runners and bikers to rest their heads in 1987. The abode is not accessible via car, and a booking is essential. There are just 22 beds in four rooms, offering no-frills overnight stays, with no mains electricity, phone reception or central heating. There is just one solar-powered shower, and the only services are simple breakfasts and basic shop supplies. Sorry, Skiddaw House Youth Hostel does not accept pets.
