You're in luck if you envision twiddling your toes on gorgeous beaches. West Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand shoreline lapped by turquoise waters, is so captivating that the Thai Tourist Board mistakenly used an image of the shore to promote Kai Bae Beach! The Caribbean-like shoreline stretches three miles with gorgeous machair running parallel to the beach. Wildlife thrives in the area, with numerous elusive species like the corncrake. In the summer, the machair blooms with wildflowers and rare orchids. East Beach, closer to Rushgarry, is equally pretty with captivating views and excellent opportunities for spotting wildlife like various seabirds like oystercatchers and lapwings, plus seals on the eastern side of Berneray at low tide.

Active types can get their heart pumping by exploring a wealth of activities on land and sea. Hire a campervan in Edinburgh and journey from the mainland, with room to store your inflatable kayaks. Explore the sheltered bays and enclosing waters at the beach, and you may even have the opportunity to get close to marine life. Angling enthusiasts can cast a line for trout and other local species at nearby lochs and along the coastline.

If walking is more your vibe, explore Berneray's scenic and small trails that wind through machair meadows and crofting landscapes. There are plenty of routes along the quiet coastline and more scenery to soak in on the Berneray Causeway.

What a splendid stay awaits you at Talla Na Mara, a stunning brand new site on the equally new Community Enterprise Centre, looking out across the white sand shores of Niseaboist Beach.

For a taste of local history, drive to Berneray's historical crofting villages to learn about the island's agricultural past and the challenging lifestyle the early settlers face. Around 10 minutes away, the ancient Berneray Burial Cairns sprinkled across the island stand testament to history dating back thousands of years and offer a fascinating look at human activity on the island. If you're up to a drive, head over to the ruins of 13th-century Teampull Na Trionaid on North Uist to explore a former monastery and seat of learning abandoned after the Reformation.

The folk at Horgabost Campsite are well aware of the magnificent vistas and natural beauty on offer and extend a warm welcome to all camping folk keen to explore this stunning island's unique character and scenery.

Try local delicacies at the local eateries or purchase freshly caught seafood, Hebridean produce and Berneray's famed lamb to sizzle over the grill as you kick back at one of our recommended campsites in Rushgarry. Alternatively, pack a hamper with snacks, find a quiet corner to throw down a blanket on the beach or near the village, and embrace a slower pace of life as you soak in the scenery. Unwind after an eventful day under some of the UK's clearest, most star-filled skies. Whether you're admiring views of the surrounding island or kayaking with seals, Rushgarry is a beautiful destination for an outdoor campervan escape.
